VMR Raby Bay is conveniently located along Cleveland Point, adjacent to the William Street Boat Ramp.
The unit was first established in 1985 to assist boa ties in distress and operated from a caravan together with a six meter vessel. The unit now maintains 4 vessels from it's large headquarters.
All of the unit's crew (6 shifts) work as unpaid volunteers on 12 hour shifts. The unit relies heavily on fundraising and local support through it's membership program to maintain the boats and infrastructure. Without this support and fundraising, it would not be possible to continue to provide this level of service to the community. We currently average one response per day (365 days) although we officially only operate on Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays. Crews are regularly called out during the week and often in the middle of the night to help save lives. |
